ABOUT ONE SELF
Philosophy and goals in life
Let's get heated up, shall we? My name is Lai Yoke Jen, better known as Jen THE GREAT. Nahhhh. Just joking. Call me Jen in short. I'm currently studying in Unitar International University taking Bachelors of Education majoring in Mathematics.
You asked me why I choose to teach profession? To be honest, I do not have an ambition, and even if I have one, it changes with time. But then, it's by faith that I got the golden opportunity to enroll here in UNITAR as I was selected to be the scholar of STEP SCHOLARSHIP by Ilmu Education Group.
To top that, I actually enjoy teaching and I love to share my knowledge and experience with people. As I am an outgoing person, I could easily mix with people. I actually found my love in teaching when I was doing volunteering job teaching children from an orphanage home back in my hometown. I spend my spare time after my STPM doing volunteering job such as giving free tuition for the children there. The joy and satisfaction I obtained as I was engaging and teaching the children there ignite my desire and passion for teaching. The smile on their cute little faces after they manage to understand what is taught and to finish their homework adds joy to my life.
Everyone have goals in life. Goals are the ones that move us in life and to act as a motivation that motivates us to hang on. My goals include to be able to graduate with a First Class Honours and to be able to be a good teacher in the future, I would also love to set up a tuition center after I have a stable income as I can further expand my teaching experience. If possible, I wished to pursue my studies until Ph.D. level as for me to equip myself with better knowledge so that I would be able to share genuine knowledge to my future students.
It is my belief that there is no “one, correct way” to teach students. Each student may have a unique style of learning and aptitudes in which a teacher has to adapt in some ways. I believe it is important as an educator to keep learning and continue to modify their approach to finding the best ways to relate material to your students.
My philosophy of teaching is based on a belief that learning needs to be student-centered and that students need to be an active learner. My emphasis is being a facilitator, rather than just provider dispensing my knowledge to them. I am there to “light their candle," not just "fill their bucket.” I want students to actively participate, rather than passively learn. Students have to directly participate in their own learning by doing hands-on activity, group discussion and also coming up with new ideas. I truly believe that knowledge gained through active participation is the knowledge that will stay with an individual. Basic skills which include problem-solving and critical thinking and effective communication ability can be developed through active learning.
In choosing to become a teacher, I have made the commitment to myself and my future students to be the best academic, personal, and ethical role model I can be. It is my goal as a teacher to instill a passion for learning within students while providing them skills necessary information that is encouraging and positive for success. I am prepared to rise to the challenges of teaching in the 21st century, and I promise to try to provide an honest, well-rounded education to every student I encounter.
